GIS, Spatial Analysis, and Mapping

“GIS” stands for geographic information system — a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present spatial or geographic data. In practice, anytime we are looking at or searching a map that has information layered on it, we are interacting with a GIS.

GIS has widespread scholarly applications, and we can match you with the right tools and enough information to get you started. We can also connect you to a variety of spatial data sets to populate your maps.

CDS has expertise in spatial humanities. If you want to think through how to create a map with shifting borders and landscapes or locations that are hard to turn into coordinates due to changing locations, please get in touch.

In addition, CDS often works on projects and has set up infrastructure to help you navigate changing project teams (for example, when a student graduates). You can create a StoryMap under the CDS organization, which will enable you to keep your StoryMap passed when the original “owner” of the map might leave Brown, for example.

Supported Applications

  • ArcGIS StoryMaps
  • QGIS and GRASS
  • PostGIS and Spatialite
  • OpenStreetMap
  • Other open source and task specific tools
  • Leaflet

If you need help with these applications (or help with matching a tool to your needs) feel free to contact us.
